Closed Issue: Cleanup should access the media location to verify [8970]

During the librarian operation of Deleting Dead tracks, the operation should attempt to open the file to verify it exists. The operation seems to use the itunes ;missing' flag and removes the library entry without actual verification of the file being missing.

I am running 10.5.1.42

I'm not quite sure how to enable logging. I opened the config file with notepad, but was a little lost about what to do next - can you help? There was no log file in c:\program files\river software\ituner

Apologies, I wish I could reproduce this but I can't! That's not an excuse, I just can't find a machine that duplicates the problem. Can you please provide any further details? Can you enable logging by editing the .config file? Is there a .log file in the install directory? Thanks.

Was a solution ever figured out for this? I'm having the same problem:

Windows 7 Ultimate, Itunes 10.5.1, just downloaded the latest version of ituner today.

I'm using all english versions of everything.

Description:
This is my patch for the german translation of iTuner

I've fixed a lot of grammar issues and spelling errors.
Also i've completely rewritten the options dialog, which was verys poor translated.

Please note that with this patch, the apple trademark text in the about dialog is way too long,
but there is no other translation I can think of that is shorter.

I will upload some other patches for the german translation the next days.

The Dead Track feature is implemented by the PhantomScanner class (if you care about the code). This class does not look at a "missing" flag but instead looks at the "location" property of the track. If the location is empty then iTunes doesn't know about the actual file - meaning there's no file path for me to check - so we assume the entry is invalid. If the "location" property is specified then we test if File.Exists(location) and if that returns False then we again assume the entry is invalid.

So when possible, iTunes is in fact checking for the existence of all files for all tracks. That's the best - and only - way to validate every single entry in your iTunes library.

Why?
While iTunes is a very intuitive and feature-rich application, as a developer I normally have many windows open at the same time and screen real-estate is at a premium. Bringing iTunes to the foreground is often intrusive and overly cumbersome for clicking a single button or reading a quick track title. Running in Mini Player mode or minimizing iTunes to the Windows taskbar as a small toolbar are both great and provide handy playback controls. But neither is perfect. After using iTunes for a little while, I started realizing what I really wanted... iTuner is small, light-weight, intuitive, and its automated features make it more powerful than any iTunes add-on available.

Verify and fix errors in track info using online providers
Download and display album artwork in track change popup
Startup with iTunes, as an iTunes plug-in
Scheduled iPod/iPhone synchronization
Integration with Windows Messenger to show current song
